Baseball earns key series win over Colorado Northwestern

The Utah State Eastern baseball team welcomed the Colorado Northwestern Community College Spartans for their first matchup of the season. The two teams entered the series with similar records in conference play.

In a cold, snowy series opener, the Eagles opened with a dominant 12-2 win. The Eagles used a seven-run third inning to dominate the Eagles. Truman Duryea led the Eagles with three RBIs, while Jake Lindsay, Jace Olsen, and Logan Burgess each homered. Harley Vicchrilli tossed a complete game on the mound for Eastern.

The second game of the series was dominated by CNCC. USU Eastern fell 17-0. Three different Eagles recorded a hit in the loss.

In a rebound performance, Eastern scored four runs in the second inning, taking a lead they held until the end of the game. The Eagles turned a game-ending triple play to earn the 6-3 win. Cam Ford had three RBIs, and Makaio Swensen had eight strikeouts on the mound.

With a chance to clinch the series, the Eagles left no doubt in the finale. Scoring four runs in the first inning, and 10 in the third, Eastern dominated their way to a 14-1 win. The win gave Eastern a 3-1 series win. Jace Olsen and Truman Duryea each homered while the Eagles had 13 hits in the game.

After the first round of conference play, the Eagles sit at 24-20 on the season, and 5-7 in conference play. They will continue conference play with a four-game series against the College of Southern Idaho. Games will be played Thursday-Saturday in Helper, Utah.
