Baseball battles against Salt Lake; goes 1-3 on the weekend

The Utah State Eastern baseball hit the road for the first time in a month to take on conference foe, Salt Lake Community College. In the first meeting between the two, the Eagles and Bruins split the series, 2-2.

The series started with the Bruins jumping out to a 6-0 lead after the first five innings. Eastern responded with two runs in the sixth, and one in the seventh, but the Eagles fell 11-3 in the opener. Gaige Woods led the Eagles with a 3-3 performance, including a solo home run.

The Eagles brought their bats in the second game, scoring four runs in the third inning. Eastern added another two runs in the fifth inning, and Kade Newman closed out the bottom of the seventh for a 6-5, Eastern win. Gaige Woods and Jose Pereira each recorded two hits in the game, and Jace Olsen added two RBIs. Makaio Swensen earned the win on the mound, and Kade Newman recorded the final two outs of the game for the save.

Eastern opened the third game with a run in the top of the first. Salt Lake then scored seven straight runs, opening a lead over the Eagles. Eastern scored three more runs before the end of the game, but the Eagles fell 12-4. Jake Lindsay went 2-3 with a two-run home run. Logan Burgess also had a solo shot in the game.

In the series finale, the Eagles were unable to keep up with the Bruins' offense. Eastern scored two runs in the third inning but fell 10-2 in the end. Truman Duryea and Jace Olsen each tallied an RBI.

After the series, the Eagles currently sit at 26-26 on the season. Their 7-13 record currently sits them in third place of the Scenic West standings. The Eagles will next travel to Colorado Northwestern Community College for the regular season finale. If the Eagles win at least two games against the Spartans, they will earn the No. 3 seed in the SWAC postseason tournament.
