Baseball’s season comes to an end in SWAC Tournament

The Utah State Eastern baseball team entered the Scenic West Athletic Conference postseason tournament as the No. 3 seed. They were given the task of a best-of-three series against No. 2 seed Salt Lake Community College.

The Eagles started the first game with an explosive five-run first inning. The Eagles used three singles to open a 5-0 after the top of the first. Salt Lake responded by scoring eight-straight, unanswered runs, to take an 8-5 lead after the eighth inning. Despite scoring a run in the top of the ninth, the Eagles fell 8-6.

Jose Pereira led the Eagles with a 2-4 performance, providing the Eagles with 3 RBIs in the contest.

Facing elimination, Eastern needed a win in game two to keep their season alive. Both pitchers dominated through the first four innings of the game, allowing just one combined hit. Eastern finally broke through with two runs in the top of the fifth. SLCC scored eight runs in the bottom half of the inning, stopping any Eastern momentum. The Eagles scored again in the sixth and seventh innings, but it was not enough. Eastern's season ended on a 9-4 loss.

Truman Duryea and Stockton Mathis each had two hits in the game. Dagen Gammell had a good performance on the mound with 3.1 innings of work.

The loss ended the Eagles season with a 29-29 record. The Eagles went 10-14 in conference play and had a solid 17-7 record at home.
