The Utah State Eastern baseball team traveled to Douglas, Arizona, to take on the No. 13 Cochise College Apaches. The four-game series was their second of the week, playing 8 eight games in five days.
The series opened with a closely-contested matchup. The two teams entered the seventh inning tied at 2. A double by Gaige Woods and a single by Beau Anderson gave Eastern a 5-2 lead heading into the final three outs. The Apaches scored two runs in the frame, but Harley Vicchrilli closed out his complete-game performance to win the game, 5-4.
The second game of the doubleheader was dominated by the Apaches. Cochise scored five runs in the first inning, setting the tone for the rest of the game. Eastern only managed three hits in the 1-9 loss.
The third game of the series was dominated again by Cochise. After the Eagles took a 5-4 lead in the top of the fifth inning, the Apaches scored 11-unanswered runs to run-rule the Eagles 5-15.
In the final game of the series, the Eagles jumped out to an early 5-0 lead. Jace Olsen drove a 2-run double to the wall to help cushion Eastern's lead. The Apaches attempted a comeback, scoring four runs in the fifth inning, but Truman Duryea and Kade Newman stopped the comeback. Newman and Duryea finished with 11 strikeouts in the game as Eastern won, 5-4.
Peyton Adams and Truman Duryea each had four hits in the series, while Jake Lindsay had four RBIs to lead the Eagles.
The Eagles will next take the field against the Trinidad State College Trojans. Doubleheaders are scheduled for Friday and Saturday in Trinidad, Colorado. Â
