Yuma, AZ - The Lady Eagles played the first of three days at the Great Western Shootout in Yuma, AZ. They went 1-1 for the day, beating Central Arizona College 10-1 in five innings and losing to Glendale Community College 11-9 in an extra inning game.
Â
The day started off hot for the Eagles, freshman
Shayna Alofipo batted in four runs and freshman
Marisa Bowman drove in three to help the Eagles with the win. The game started off when Bowman blasted a double on a 1-1 count to bring in the first run.
Â
Sophomore
Nyah DeRyke led things off on the rubber for the Eagles. She went five innings, allowing one run on four hits, striking out three and walking one.
Â
"We had a good game against Central! I felt I had a great game from the circle but, knew if they got a solid hit my teammates had my back. I especially felt we worked well as a team in the lineup to jump up on them early allowing less pressure defensively" said DeRyke.
Â
The Eagles scattered 13 hits in the game. Alofipo, freshman
Jenna Sutliff ,
Madie Luck, and Bowman each racked up multiple hits for the Eagles. Sutliff and Alofipo both had three hits to lead the team. Sophomore
Alicia Cruz hit a solo homerun to start off the fifth inning.
Â
The Eagles then went on to play Glendale Community College. Despite the lose our Eagles out hit Glendale 16 to 11.
Â
In the second inning our Eagles got the offense going when freshman
Shakel Alofipo blasted a two-run homer on a 1-1 count. Following Shakel's homer, Shayna hit a two-run homer as well to put the Eagles up 4-0 in the second inning.
Â
Glendale followed up with 5 runs to take the lead in the third inning and held the lead until we tied it up in the bottom of the 7
th to take the game into extra innings where Glendale was able to take the win.
Â
"I was happy we strung things together the first game and held up on the defensive side. We fought hard the second game despite mental and physical errors, we still gave ourselves a chance to win when it came down to it. But, ultimately we just fell short today and I think that we will come back strong tomorrow and learn from the mistakes we made today" says head coach
Shelby Shurtliff.
Â
The Eagles hit the field again tomorrow for day 2 of the Great Western Shootout. Their first game will be at 1:00 p.m. against Eastern Arizona College and game 2 will be at 4:00 p.m. against Chandler-Gilbert Community College. Both games will be streamed live on the softball Facebook page as well as live stats through Game Changer.Â
