The No. 4 Utah State Eastern Eagles traveled to the College of Southern Idaho to participate in the Starr Invitational. In three scheduled matches, the Eagles faced No. 15 Northeastern Junior College, Eastern Wyoming College, and Central Wyoming College.
Friday afternoon's match, the first of a doubleheader, featured a matchup of ranked teams. Northeastern entered with a 5-3 record, while the Eagles posted a strong 7-1 record.
USU Eastern and NJC battled back-and-forth in the opening set, which eventually ended in favor of the Eagles, 29-27. Unfortunately for Eastern, NJC would bounce back to win the final three sets, 25-19, 25-23, and 28-26 to win the match and end Eastern's hot streak.
Needing a quick bounce-back, the Eagles returned to the court Friday night to take on Eastern Wyoming College. Still caught up from the last match, the Eagles dropped the first set, 23-25. A strong recovery in the second set, 25-15, proved to be enough as the Eagles won the last two sets, 25-19 and 25-22, to seal the victory.
Lastly, Saturday morning saw the Eagles face Central Wyoming, an opponent Eastern saw just the weekend before. The two teams fought in a competitive, five-set match that resulted in the Eagles' second win of the weekend. Central Wyoming won the first set 22-25 before USU Eastern responded in the second, 25-23. Central took the momentum back in the third set, 25-19, before Eastern dominated the fourth set, 25-16. In a back-and-forth fifth set, the Eagles prevailed 15-13 to win the match.
Audrey Atwood led the Eagles with 45 kills on the weekend and added impressive defensive play to anchor Eastern. Emilia Zug added 42 kills of her own to supplement the offense. Ella Persson had 61 digs on the weekend to lead the Eagles defensively.
Up next for USU Eastern is another tournament at Salt Lake Community College. This will be the last non-conference opportunity of the season for the Eagles.
