Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Jose Briseno - Assistant SID

No. 6 Eastern stays hot with three wins before SWAC play begins

The No. 6 Utah State Eastern volleyball team traveled to Salt Lake Community College to take part in the UFirst Intermountain Invite. They were scheduled for four matches against Eastern Wyoming College, No. 10 Trinity Valley Community College, No. 1 Miami Dade College, and Missouri State University-West Plains.

Friday morning was the start of the weekend as the Eagles took on Eastern Wyoming. A close first set was won by USU Eastern, 28-26. The win gave the Eagles momentum, and Eastern Wyoming was not able to recover. The Eagles would dominate the second set, 25-9, before taking the third set, 25-20, to complete the quick sweep. Audrey Atwood and Emilia Zug led the Eagles with eight and seven kills, respectively. Atwood also had four blocks to go along with Clara Philipsson's seven. Ella Persson recorded 10 digs to lead the Eagles defensively.

The Eagles returned to the court Friday evening for a top-10 match up with No. 10 Trinity Valley. The ranked match was the back-and-forth affair that was anticipated. Trinity Valley started the match strong with a 13-25 first set. Eastern recovered to win the second set 25-21 to even the match at 1-1. Trinity Valley won the third set with a 25-17 score, but it was the Eagles that took a close fourth set, 25-23. The fourth set carried the Eagles into the decisive fifth set, which favored the Eagles 15-5 and clinched the match 3-2. Atwood and Zug led the Eagles, once again, each tallying 15 kills in the match. Persson had 21 digs, followed by 14 from Zug.

After a successful Friday, Saturday welcomed the biggest challenge of Eastern's young season. No. 1 Miami Dade showed why they were ranked at the top after a 3-0 sweep of Eastern, 25-13, 25-18, and 25-23. Atwood had seven kills to lead the Eagles, followed by six from Amy Baczuk. Baczuk added four blocks to her performance.

Looking for a rebound, the Eagles finished the weekend with a dominant, 3-0 sweep of Missouri State-West Plains, 25-23, 25-22, and 25-18. Agata Zwierzynska led the Eagles with 14 kills, while Zug added 10 to supplement the attack. Atwood helped defensively with 18 digs in the match.

Up next for the Eagles is the beginning of conference play. The No. 6 Eagles will travel to play Colorado Northwestern Community College on Friday, September 26, before facing the No. 12 Salt Lake Community College Bruins on Saturday, in Taylorsville.
