Eagles’ offense stalls in loss to Salt Lake CC

The Utah State Eastern women's basketball game traveled to Salt Lake Community College to conclude the second round of Scenic West Conference play. The first time these teams played, Eastern won, 70-66.

The Eagles started the game well, increasing their lead to four, 10-6. SLCC closed the quarter on an 11-2 run, leaving Eastern in a 12-17 deficit at the end of the quarter.

Despite working to cut the Bruin lead to two points, the Bruins pulled off a 9-0 run to put Eastern behind by 11 points. Before the end of the half, the Eagles managed to cut the Bruin lead to single digits. Eastern trailed 27-36 at the half.

Skylie Barker led the Eagles with 10 points at the half. The 10 Eastern turnovers in the first half gave SLCC extra opportunities to grow their lead.

The Eagles battled out of the half and controlled possession for the majority of the quarter. Outscoring the Bruins 15-11 in the period, the Eagles cut the SLCC lead to just five points heading into the fourth.

The fourth, however, belonged to the Bruins, who held onto their lead, defeating the Eagles 46-58.

Skylie Barker finished as the leading scorer for the Eagles with 12 points. The Eagles outrebounded the Bruins 47-37.

After the loss, the Eagles are currently tied for first place in the Scenic West Athletic Conference standings. With five games left this regular season, the Eagles and the College of Southern Idaho are tied at 8-2 atop the conference.

Next for the Eagles is the final matchup of the season with the Snow College Badgers. Eastern will head to Ephraim on Thursday, Feb. 12, at 5:00 p.m.
