Box Score PRICE, Utah – On Valentines Day the Utah State Eastern women's basketball team defeated fourth ranked Salt Lake Community College 59-57 to give the Bruins their first conference loss of the season.
The Eagles led the Bruins most of the game with strong performances in the first half from every player that logged minutes for Head Coach
Chelsey Warburton. At the end of the game each player who checked in scored at least two points.
Although the Bruins tried to take the lead toward the end of the first half but the Eagles took control of the game especially from the three point line.
With under two minutes to go in the half, freshman
Madison Loftus made two three point shots and sophomores
Mateah Tuckett and
Bryndie Ballam each made a three as well. The efficient three point shooting at the end of the period gave the Eagles a solid six point lead going into the third quarter.
During the third quarter however the Eagles only scored six points allowing the Bruins to get back in the game and take a 39-37 lead going into the final quarter.
The three point shooting wasn't the only reason why the Eagles defeated the Bruins on Tuesday according to Coach Warburton.
"We outrebounded SLCC and held their top scorer to only 4 points in the second half," said Warburton. The Eagles out rebounded the Bruins 41-37 with 29 of those rebounds coming from the defensive end to keep the Bruins from second chance points opportunities.
Leading the Eagles in scoring against SLCC was Loftus who finished with 20 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists.
Sophomore
Maile Richardson led the team in rebounding with 11. She also led the team in blocks with two on the night while staying out of foul trouble.
The Eagles now have won 3 out of their last 4 games with one more game at home tomorrow night against Colorado Northwest.
The game against Colorado Northwest is sophomore night and tips off at 5:30 p.m. at the BDAC. The game will also be streamed live on the Utah State Eastern YouTube channel.
