Box Score PRICE, Utah – The Utah State Eastern women's basketball team defeated the College of Southern Golden Eagles 75-68 on Thursday.
With the win the Eagles snapped a three-game home losing streak and give Head Coach
Chelsey Warburton her first win over the Golden Eagles.
The first quarter featured a rough start for the Eagles, they were down 21-11 at the end of the period and couldn't get the shots to fall.
By halftime the College of Southern Idaho was up 14 and looking to beat the Eagles again for the third time this season.
The Eagles came back roaring in the third quarter erasing the double-deficit thanks to solid rebounding and eliminating CSI's opportunities at second chance points said Warburton.
"At halftime they were out rebounding us, the team did a great job of changing that in the second half especially the last several minutes of the game. Giving them no second chance points helped us keep the lead," Warburton said.
The Eagles finished the game with nine more rebounds than CSI and only allowed them to grab 12 offensive rebounds.
Going into the fourth quarter the Eagles were only down one point after outscoring the Golden Eagles 28-14 in the third quarter.
They finally took the lead in the fourth quarter with the help of their bench play which Warburton said was a big factor in the outcome of the game.
"The bench was key in our win tonight. Sara (Morley)and Bryndie (Ballam) played well, Sara had key rebounds and defensive stops while Bryndie had a huge 3 pointer as well as free throws. I am happy with their performance," Warburton said.
Morley finished the night with seven points, six rebounds and 3 blocks in 27 minutes of action. Ballam had 11 points including a huge three point shot in the fourth to give the Eagles momentum to finish the game.
At the free throw line the Eagles made 30 out 40 attempts which helped them keep pace with a very good shooting team in CSI.
"We missed several shots as a team the first half but they continued to shoot and it paid off for them. Free throws have been a positive for us this year and the girls are doing a great job at attacking the basket to get to the line," Warburton said.
The leading scorer against CSI was freshman guard
Madison Loftus who finished the night with 24 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals.
Sophomore center
Maile Richardson contributed with 10 points and 9 rebounds with 2 blocks. All 10 of Richardson's points came from the free throw line where she made 10 of 12 attempts.
The Eagles will now look to win back to back conference games for the first time this season next week against Salt Lake Community College and Colorado Northwest.
Warburton said that she hopes this win gives her team momentum to finish the home schedule strong before hitting the road the last week of the season for their final two games.
The Eagles will host SLCC on Tuesday night at 5:30 p.m. in the Bunnell-Dimitrich Athletic Center. The game will be streamed live on the Utah State Eastern YouTube channel as well.
