Women's Basketball Completes Arizona Challenge

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 PRICE, Utah – The Utah State Eastern women's basketball played three games in four days last week in Arizona as part of the Arizona Challenge tournament.

They left Price last Tuesday to travel down to Glendale, Arizona to take on Glendale Community College on Wednesday where they defeated the Gauchos 67-47.

Against Glendale the Eagles were led by freshman Madison Loftus who scored 15 points with shooting 50 percent from beyond the three point line. Freshman Kaitlyn Toluono had a big game as well scoring 11 points and 8 rebounds.

Freshman Baylee Leiter was also a major contributor with six points, seven rebounds and three assists. Sophomore center Maile Richardson finished the game in double figures with 10 points.

Head Coach Chelsey Warburton said that her team did well on the boards and at the free throw line to help give her team the win. The Eagles had 35 rebounds and were 81.6% at the free throw line.

After a day off on Thursday, the Eagles took on South Mountain Community College on Friday evening where they lost to the Cougars in a close game, 50-47.

The Eagles had a tough game at the free throw line shooting 50% percent from the line. They also had 27 turnovers in the game which allowed South Mountain to stay in the game.

Despite the loss, freshman guard Lauren O'Connell had a big game for the Eagles scoring 19 points and shooting 57% from three point range. Richardson scored 10 points and four rebounds against the Cougars.

To close out the Arizona Challenge the Eagles picked up a convincing 59-37 win over the Chandler-Gilbert Coyotes on Saturday.

Warburton said after the game that she was happy the way her team responded after the tough loss against South Mountain.

"It was great for our confidence to get a win against Chandler-Gilbert especially after our loss to South Mountain the night before.  The team responded well to the adjustments we made on offense and defense, took care of the ball, and did a better job of sharing the ball and making the correct reads," said Warburton.

Sophomore forward Mateah Tuckett  led the Eagles in points with nine coming off the bench. Toluono had six points and six rebounds and Richardson had another solid game with 6 points and five rebounds.

The team's record now moves to 5-2 overall and will continue their preseason schedule this coming weekend in Taylorsville. They will participate in the SLCC Thanksgiving Tournament Friday and Saturday.

Friday they will play against Casper College for the second time this season at 1 p.m. Earlier this season the Eagles lost to Casper 70-51 in their first game of the season in Casper, Wyoming. The Eagles will close out the holiday weekend with a Saturday afternoon game against Williston State at 1 p.m.

Warburton said that with the holiday break, her team will try to work as hard as they can to stay focus while also spending time with family.

"We will continue to focus on us and what we need to do on the court this weekend to be successful as a team while we balance Thanksgiving and time with family," said Warburton
