The Utah State Eastern women's basketball team continued its recent stretch of road games with a trip to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, for a matchup against the 6-10 North Idaho College Cardinals. This was the first meeting for the two teams this season.
The Eagles started the game fast, opening with an 11-2 run after five minutes of play. Throughout the quarter, the Cardinals trimmed the Eagle lead to as little as five points, but Eastern finished the quarter with a 17-10 lead.
The two teams battled in the second period. North Idaho cut Eastern's lead to just four points before Eastern made a run to close the half with a 34-24 lead. Marlee Pieper, Avery Sanders, and Addasyn Scrivner each had six points to lead the Eagles. The Eagles outscored the Cardinals 6-0 on second-chance points thanks to eight offensive rebounds in the half.
The Cardinals responded in the third quarter, starting the period with a 6-0 run. A few Eastern turnovers gave the Cardinals enough momentum to cut the Eagles' lead to just two points with under two minutes left in the quarter. The Eagles held to a 41-37 lead heading into the final period.
Needing to respond, the Eagles opened the final period with an 8-3 run, extending their lead to as many as 10 points. The Eagles closed out the game to finish with a 58-46 win.
Marlee Pieper led the Eagles with 11 points. Avery Sanders scored 10 points to finish in double-figures.
After a 4th-straight conference win, the next game for the Eagles will be on Saturday, Jan. 17, in Twin Falls, Idaho, against the No. 9-ranked College of Southern Idaho Golden Eagles. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
